, March, 18 2006 - Following an article on Jeffrey Sachs, author of the book "The end of Poverty",is an insightful article by Stephanie Nolen about the current state of things in Sauri, Kenya.

They started in Sauri because it had so many of the typical characteristics of extreme poverty. Two-thirds of its people were living on less than $1 a day, a quarter of them with HIV-AIDS, almost half infected with malaria parasites and half the children victims of chronic poor nutrition.

…$100 (U.S.) a head — enough money for better seeds, some fertilizer, a bed net to fend off malarial mosquitoes, a share in a protected water source, a school lunch for the kids, a solar lantern

Malaria is down by half, school performance has shot up, harvests have tripled.
