Liberia , September, 07 2006 - Following a two-month training course in micro credit scheme, about 60 women in Saclepea Mah District, in Nimba County, have qualified to benefit from the first disbursement of a total of US$4,800.00.

The successes of these small loans, which are payable within 13 weeks, would pave the way for future opportunities.

Speaking at the disbursement ceremony, the Development Superintendent of Nimba County, Mr. Henry Quadell, thanked the UNDP and assured the organization that the loans would help to strengthen the capacities of already existing businesses and new ones.

Also commenting, the UNDP County Coordinator on Community-Based Recovery Programme, Mr. Vecente Queipo, reminded the women that business is a discipline and urged them to utilize the loans for the intended purpose.

The UNDP Gender, Human Rights and Protection Programme in collaboration with the Community-Based Recovery Programme, seeks to compliment present post-conflict efforts focusing on the economic needs of women and girls at the county levels.

The program is also aimed at promoting sustainable employment through micro-enterprises, cooperative farming, and skills training. It is also geared towards promoting a strong sense of networking and participation in both social and economic life in local communities.

The training provided by the UNDP would help the women to be able to properly calculate their profit margin, which involves separating profits from capital and eventually leading to the jump-start of the rural economy.

According to UNDP officials, the essence of the micro-credit scheme is to empower rural women so that they can become economically independent.

The loans were made possible through support provided by the Japanese Women Development Fund, and are being managed by the UNDP Women Empowerment Initiative.
